the weighty truth
At Body & Soul, we know that your bathroom scale alone can't tell you if you are "healthy". Our health is much more complex than just our weight. That's why our health assessments include a number of tests and measurements that evaluate cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, musculoskeletal fitness and more.
That said, the truth is that being overweight can have serious repercussions for your health. Here are just a few statistics that show some of the serious impacts of carrying extra pounds:
- Excess body fat increases the risk of many cancers, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, leukemia, and cancers of the kidney, pancreas, colon, breast and prostate1
- Being overweight increases your risk of developing heart failure by 34% and being obese increases your risk by 104%2
- The risk of developing diabetes increases by 27% for a weight increase of just 5 kg or more3
The good news is that multiple research studies4,5 show that these risks can be reduced substantially by moderate weight loss (5-10% of body weight), regular physical activity and a healthy diet. Are you at a healthy weight? Call us to book a health assessment today to find out.

fitness tip: lift to lose
Resistance training is often neglected in the journey of weight loss. However, using free weights can help you reach your weight loss goals faster by adding muscle mass and activating already existing muscle fibers. The trick lies in the mitochondria, the "power plants" of the body. The more a person has, the more calories can be burned. To get your power plants going, use a heavier weight for 2 to 3 sets of between 10 and 15 repetitions. You should feel fatigue after the last repetition.

nutrition tip: variety is the spice of life
We all tend to eat our favorite foods over and over again, but unfortunately even if your favourite foods are healthy they can be too much of a good thing. When we always eat the same foods, our body always gets the same nutrients. To add variety to the nutrients in your diet, try adding a new veggie (summer is a great time for veggies) or grain (have you tried quinoa, amaranth, kamut or millet?). By switching up your foods from time to time, you will be sure to get the minerals and vitamins your body needs to maintain its optimal health.

Q: If I'm overweight should my initial workouts focus solely on cardio?
A: Cardiovascular training at the right intensity is a powerful tool for losing weight. However, your training session will be more effective if it also incorporates strength training.
To lose weight you must burn energy. This is done with cardiovascular activity and also with your muscles. Muscles burn energy even when they are at rest and therefore the more muscles you have, the more calories you burn, even when your body is at rest.
Your Body & Soul trainer will incorporate both strength and cardio into your workouts to ensure you get the most effective workout to meet your weight loss goals.
